So those of you who ship Steve/Tony just from the movies, can you please explain to me WHY?

I got into the fandom via the movies, but I didn’t ship Steve/Tony until I read a lot of the comics, and I still prefer 616 or Marvel Adventures to MCU versions of the ship. And when I do ship them in MCU I’m carrying back a lot of my comics headcanons.

So I’m just curious, those of you who do ship it from the movies can you explain the appeal? Because they didn’t have much of a connection… at all… in the movies imho. Steve respects him by the end of the Avengers, but they barely even like each other yet. I can only see them having the dynamic compatible to romance several years down the road MCU wise.

I’m not trying to sound rude or elitist. I’m just genuinely curious.

Essentially, what I think is that MCU has a legitimate case for being a point of relationship acceleration. It has elements to its backstory and different personality quirks that leap-frog some of the years it took for 616 to reach the level it’s at now.

First of all, the like vs respect thing. It’s certainly possible! But I have to disagree, based on the way Steve strode forward to grip Tony’s arm at the end of the movie and, more importantly, based on what we see of Steve in CA:TFA.

Steve can be a stubborn SOB, that’s for sure, but he is, to his last fibre, fair. That fairness might be delayed by his own issues, or by misjudgement, but once he’s aware of his mistake he tries to rectify it. And on the whole, Steve prefers to like people. All the abuse he’s taken, and he’s not a bitter douche of a person—his faith in humanity and in what humanity can be is the cornerstone of his character. And I think being as vicious as they were to each other (and damn were they) on the Helicarrier was actually a boon to their friendship, because Steve was wrong. Putting aside whatever Tony did, because what Tony said and did is Tony’s to make amends for, Steve was wrong and he spoke out of his own anger and his own loss, and he levelled unfair charges at a man. He says it himself, “I’ve seen the footage.” Not “I’ve met you.” or “I’ve fought alongside you.” but “I’ve seen the footage.” He’s basing an opinion on media reports and that gives him about as good an idea of Tony as a Captain America kids’ comic gave this new world about him. And by the end of the movie he has clearly understood his mistake. Based on that, I see Steve as being more willing than he otherwise would be even to a stranger (and for his level of willingness to be friendly to a stranger who is not Nick Fury, even in his current bleak mental state, I ref his handshake and “That’s all I care about” on first meeting Bruce) to BE actively friendly to Tony, or at least to give him a chance, because he was a dick about misjudging him and that was his call and his fault. More than that, it’s his to make up. He’s not the guy to snarl in someone else’s face, and that he was that guy is going to bother him.

Tony, for his part, wasn’t exactly the welcome parade. But he did reach out to Steve at more than one point. He readily admitted to him that he was hacking the system, placing trust in him; he might have been impatient and blasé but on the whole in very few exchanges was he the first to hurl the insult. He physically attempted to touch Steve in a show of team solidarity, and he offered him a blueberry when they weren’t getting along, mostly because he’d offered Bruce one. Tony was no saint but he clearly wanted to get along with Steve and why wouldn’t he, because being liked by this guy is essentially being told you’re a decent person by proxy. But more seriously, there was a part of his father’s life he never knew. Tony has big honking issues with Howard but in IM2 we saw how he wanted Fury to stop and tell him more about this sudden window onto a man he didn’t know, and Fury blows him off and leaves. Something tells me Fury never made the time to come back and finish telling him about what happened—he told him just enough to get Tony motivated towards the purposes he wanted him motivated towards, and gave away none of the intimate details of his friendship with Howard Stark. Which was in my opinion VERY CRUEL but wtfe not this essay.

So if Steve does do his best to be a decent person towards him, and Tony feels like he’s actually being liked not judged, sure he’s going to give him a bit of “wow you were a dick”, but you’ve got the groundwork there for the start of a friendship. More crucially, for interaction ,rather than just respect.

As for why MCU:

MCU Tony has an easy neurotic irreverence which 616 Tony doesn’t have, not with the same self-propelling steam. 616 Tony has his own set of strengths and flaws, but we’ve seen with the way MCU Tony handles Bruce’s issues that he’s capable and willing to slipslide and slapdash his way right into his own problems and someone else’s (probably so he can slipslide and slapdash straight back out again, but more and more he’s running less as his arc progresses). This is a technique we don’t see him use with Steve, but that might have something to do with the fact that Steve never once smiles at him, or gives him anything other than disapproval and guarded words until after Coulson’s death. I’m not saying Tony’s eager to go down that road, or he’s looking to pile on anyone else’s manpain, but he’s started this arc of coming to peace with himself, being the hero and being a team player, and both of these things crossover in Steve in a way they don’t in 616. (No-one told 616 Tony that he couldn’t be on the team at the start; he was the team. His team-mate’s acceptance was assured because if you had a problem with Iron Man on the team, then your option was: leave the team.)

MCU Tony is startling perceptive in the here-and-now, and as Steve isn’t afraid to tell him when he’s being a bag of dicks, Tony has no filter and an amazing capacity for no-strings affection. When Rhodey was pissed at him in IM1, he didn’t fight him, he got him drunk and happy. It might not have been the right way of going about it, but to deflect and cheer up is MCU Tony’s typical response, and it requires a blasé willfulness to steamroller Steve’s Boy Scout reputation that 616 Tony didn’t display towards Cap (in their early association) until some of the retcon issues. MCU Tony will go right to the root on first meeting, not just after five years of knowing him, and say “well aren’t you fucking depressed jesus you’re making me miserable just looking at you get out”. And then he’ll say “no wait I’m kidding get back here I need you to stand and hold this hey want lunch”. Because Tony has spent so much of his life destroying as much as he builds that he does both seamlessly, and rarely is he ever patted on the head for it. He’s normally patted on the wallet or the crotch. If he starts to display behaviour towards Steve that Steve is finally in the frame of mind to accept might be genuinely an act of hospitality rather than mockery, he will get positive reinforcement, and that is damnably addictive. Tony’s likely to keep doing it.

Now with Steve, I think the BIG CRUCIAL difference is that in 616, Steve did not know that Tony Stark was Iron Man at the start. He was very good friends with Iron Man, but they had to go their separate ways when they were off duty and it was off duty that Steve had time to think about how much his life sucked. Sure, maybe there was a telephone call or two, but at the start Steve’s friends were the Avengers, and they and Tony had a whole other life that Steve wasn’t a part of. And, unfortunately, that’s the half of someone’s life where you talk over coffee and walk through Central Park and maybe, just maybe, start to open up a bit about the fact you trashed a hotel room with your shield in a fit of depression. Iron Man and Cap didn’t start to share details of their personal lives for quite a long time, and notably after Iron Man left the team and removed himself as a stable source of continuity in Steve’s new life. Their interaction was couched in the need to be masculine and heroic and upstanding — Iron Man’s opinion was always notably more sensible than Tony’s – so there wasn’t really the capacity there for a friendship to develop that might have supported Steve the way Sam’s understanding did in 616. I don’t say that because I think MCU Tony has Sam’s gift for empathy, but he is in a position of relative stability with his company, life and other relationships. And whereas in 616 they’re pretty much of age, in MCU Tony is 42 and Steve is an (awake) 27. There are fifteen more years there to draw on, and a lot of the difficult things that happened during their 616 association happened to MCU Tony before they met. That doesn’t undermine Steve’s own breadth of experience, maturity or fortitude. It simply means that MCU Steve is lonely and mourning, and as a strong man and a strong character, he’s not the type to look at a helping hand and say to himself “I’d rather wallow in my own misery.” Not when he has now accepted these people as his new brothers-in-arms, and he owes it to them to take care of them in turn. While Steve finds it incredibly difficult to ask anyone for anything for his own benefit, MCU Tony never brings things to a question if he can help it, in case he hears no. He just takes the liberties, and as MCU Steve is somewhat less authoritarian than 616’s overwhelming projection of gravitas, it’s a bit easier to feel like you might stand a chance.

I’m not saying that Tony would be gung-ho to get into someone else’s problems. I’m not saying that Steve would be in any rush to talk, but he most definitely responds to someone engaging with him as Steve Rogers rather than the bullet-proof Captain America.

I said before that MCU is a case of acceleration: an acceleration of a friendship that, on most other points, allows the same fantastic 616 chemistry and contrasts of perspective to spawn the MCU ship. But MCU’s story gives Tony a reason to ask, and Steve a real person to tell, and the means and personality magnesium to throw their quirks together just that bit sooner.

Many have tried to tackle Sherlock’s cheekbones. Some have frozen to death on the craggy ascent. Others have starved, penned into camp by freak blizzards of work ethic. A number have fallen from the lofty heights, foul play much suspected. And as for the rest, they took one look at the others, threw up their hands and said bugger this for a lark. Then they went home.
